08 Sep Venture Prep’s Maymuna Jeylani Recognized by Prominent Author
Congratulations to Venture Prep junior, Maymuna Jeylani who has been awarded the opportunity to share her poetry along-side a prominent and nationally recognized author!
Julie Lythcott-Haims, author of the New York Times bestselling book, How to Raise an Adult, will be in Denver for an event, and she issued a writing project for students between the ages of 12-17 to read a piece of original poetry that relates to the theme of being the “other,” about race and racism in America during the event. Two poems were submitted by VP English teacher, Mrs. Christina Dixon on the behalf of Maymuna, and the acceptance committee was so impressed by her work that Ms. Lythcott-Haims, requested that she presents present both pieces during the event.
After hearing the news Maymuna exclaimed, “I just wanted to write something about my experience.”
Ms. Lythcott-Haims new memoir Real American, gives voice to her own experience about race and racism, and about how she learned to forge a self and to love that self regardless of what other people may think of Black and biracial people. It is her desire to give that same voice to the next generation to express themselves regarding the same issues.
Support Maymuna as she presents her two poetry pieces during the Real American book tour on Wednesday, October 25, 2017, at 7 pm at the Tattered Cover LoDo (1628 16th St, Denver, CO 80202).
